Tinker Crate - Hands on STEM projects!

Our first Tinker Crate arrived today. Tinker Crates are STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) projects that are delivered to your child each month. There is a different project that incorporates STEM and a wonderful way to supplement your home schooled child's Science curriculum. Each kit comes in a cute Tinker Crate box and is addressed to your child.

Each Tinker Crate comes with everything you need. You will not have to search around the house for items or run to the store. These are complete hands on experiments that teach critical thinking skills along with STEM concepts.

This month, we received the Lava Lamp kit. So. Much. Fun.

Here is the link to the Tinker Crate website: Tinker Crate
Please note that if you use the link that I have provided you will receive $10 off your order and I will receive a $10 credit. Thank you in advance and enjoy your Tinker Crate!

Complete easy to understand instructions are also included in each kit.

The finished product and a proud child!

Eat Your Fractions

We cut the cheese into 12  slices.  California chose to eat 3 of the 12 slices.  3/12 = 1/4

We cut the avocado in half.  California at one half.  1/2

We cut the nectarine into 10 slices.  California ate 2 of the 10 slices.  2/10 = 1/5

We cut the orange into 4 wedges.  California ate one wedge.  1/4

We cut the lemon into 8 wedges.  California chose 3 wedges.  3/8

Then he made lemon mint water from the mint in our garden.

And here is his mid morning snack made entirely from fractions.

We kept track of our fractions and practiced how to write fractions and reduce fractions on our whiteboard as shown below.

Ocean Habitat

California counted out 26 seashells and placed them on a blue tie dyed silkie. A notecard with the word "fish" was placed near the area of the ocean habitat where California had put some sharks. We used a small house fern for seaweed.

We discussed the fact that there were 26 sea shells in our ocean and 26 letters in the alphabet. California used his fish notecard to spell the word "fish" on the fridge with magnets.

We also learned a new vocabulary word: fragile. California knows that the shells in our ocean are fragile and that means they are easily broken and he needs to be careful when he handles them.

This will be an ever expanding project as we learn more and more about ocean habitats.
