Learning Chemistry with Sun Bread

Click to find out more about this book!
Sun Bread, written and illustrated by Elisa Kleven, is a wonderful story about a village of animals that became gloomy because the sun stopped shining.  Then, a baker discovered that the simple act of baking bread that "rises and shines" could make everyone happy, including the Sun.  This story is such a magical story and it even has the recipe for Sun Bread printed on the back of the book!  This is a wonderful way to introduce the chemical reaction yeast has with sugar during the process of baking!  So, we decided to learn by "doing" and made our own Sun Bread
(see photos below). If we can do it, so can you!

                                                     *click photo to enlarge*

Each night, before bed, California (age 6) goes outside to gaze at the night sky to find a new constellation.  Then he comes back inside and draws the constellation that he has discovered.  The Sun, Moon and all the planets of the Solar System have also been labeled.

Learning Anatomy with Clay

California is fascinated with "what's inside the body".  He has made several clay creations to depict the various bodily systems over the past three years.  Yes, he has been doing this since he was three.  Below is his latest work of art.

Eat Your Fractions

We cut the cheese into 12  slices.  California chose to eat 3 of the 12 slices.  3/12 = 1/4

We cut the avocado in half.  California at one half.  1/2

We cut the nectarine into 10 slices.  California ate 2 of the 10 slices.  2/10 = 1/5

We cut the orange into 4 wedges.  California ate one wedge.  1/4

We cut the lemon into 8 wedges.  California chose 3 wedges.  3/8

Then he made lemon mint water from the mint in our garden.

And here is his mid morning snack made entirely from fractions.

We kept track of our fractions and practiced how to write fractions and reduce fractions on our whiteboard as shown below.
