MY TRIP ACROSS THE U.S.
What is your approximate route?
I start by walking out of the Earth Wind and Flower restaurant at 23rd and Wilshire, Santa Monica, Los Angeles, CA, 90404. My end destination is Long Island, NY. I will take whatever route comes to me as I go. I will try to cut my route through all my favorite cities, which are San Francisco, Las Vegas, Gila Claw (Arizona), Cloudcroft (New Mexico), Denver, St. Louis (Missouri), Detroit, Nashville, Washington DC, New York City, and of course, Long Island.
Are you going over the desert, mountains, or major rivers?
I’m going through the Mojave Desert in California, the desert around Las Vegas, the Painted Desert in Arizona (Gila Claw is there). There is a desert blocking me from Cloudcroft, but from there it’s smooth sailing. I have to go over the Santa Monica and Sierra Nevada mountains to get out of California and Nevada. I obviously have to go over the Rockies, and Appalachia. I have to go over the Colorado River, and the Grand Canyon, as well as the Rio Grande, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, and Ohio rivers.
What will the weather be like? How will you prepare for this?
San Francisco: Light breeze, Sunny, 63 – Hmm… I should take a jacket. I’ve heard its COOOOLLLD…
Las Vegas: Medium wind, Sunny, 76 – Uh… Fully insulated Tee shirt, anyone?
Gila Claw: Hot breeze, Sunny, High: 102, Right Now: 89 – VERY very short shorts, a tank top, and thick flip-flops.
Denver: High wind, Thundershowers, 63 – I think I should bring my dirt buggie… and a raincoat!
Saint Louis: Strong wind, Strong Storms, 79 – Freaky weather… I guess my dirt buggie and raincoat will take care of that.
Detroit: Medium breeze, Partly Cloudy, 83 – Long sleeves and pants will do.
Nashville: Light wind, Cloudy, 90 - Long sleeves and pants will do.
Washington D.C.: Wind, Thunderstorms, 74: My beloved dirt buggie and raincoat will help.
New York City: Wind, Isolated Thunderstorms, 65 – Once again, thunderstorms! FREAKY WEATHER!!! You know the drill: Dirt buggie and raincoat.
Long Island: Wind, Isolated Thunderstorms, 65 - FREAKY WEATHER!!! You know the drill: Dirt buggie and raincoat.
How will you travel? Will you take your bike and hiking boots with you? Your kayak or canoe? Roller blades or skateboard?
Canoe: Water Travel. I’ll rent one as soon as I reach a river, then give it back and repeat.
Kayak: Naah. I don’t need one.
Bike: Mountain/Plains Travel. Duuh! Everybody needs one on a solo trip!
Hiking Boots: ~None~
Roller Blades: Too much of a hassle.
Skateboard: I’d fall down and break my shin, so no.
Will you camp outdoors or stay in hotels? What supplies will you need?
I will stay in hotels, but camp if necessary. I will need the usual camping supplies (including marshmallows!), some extra blankets, my 3 foot long stuffed animal tiger, clothes, and $1,999.99 in cash. (Plus one penny)
What entertainment might you pursue along the way?
Zoos & aquariums, relatives’ and friends’ houses, and historical sites.
Will you travel through any national parks?
Yeah. Sequoia in CA, the heart of Death Valley, the Grand Canyon, and Carlsbad Caverns.
